5d9e3af89aa1e6adf765b2cb87fee249The Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa Ltd., Mr Andrew Dawes, on Thursday said the company had decided to relocate its physical examination site to a section of the terminal.

A statement issued by the company’s Media Advisor, Mr Bolaji Akinola in Lagos, said the proposed physical examination area was part of the phase three upgrade of the Apapa facility.

Dawes said the relocation exercise was temporary and would only last till the completion of a multi-level racking system for physical examination.

“The relocation is temporary and will last till ongoing work on the N1.6 billion permanent multi-level racking system for physical examination the company is building is completed by the second quarter of next year.

“The current physical examination site will now be relocated to a paved area within the terminal within a few weeks.

“This would be done in order to create a more conducive environment for its (APMT) customers and customs operatives, ‘’ he said.

Dawes said the company used the current open area because the customs could not use an earlier one provided as examination bay due to process variance.

The managing director assured customers of APM Terminals continued commitment to safety and high quality service delivery at its area of operation.

Dawes said that APM Terminals Apapa received five new Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes out of 10 as part of the third phase terminal upgrade.

“Five new RTGs will be commissioned in September while the remaining five will be delivered in November.

“It will enable the terminal to convert from the use of reach stackers to the more efficient RTG operation,’’ he said.

Dawes said that the container stacking area at the terminal was being increased by 74 acres.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that APM Terminals Apapa is the largest container terminal in West Africa, handling 700,000 containers (TEUs), about 70 per cent of container traffic in Nigeria.

The company took over cargo handling operations in Apapa in 2006. (NAN)
