2013 Growth Enhancement Support Scheme: 106,915 farmers have been registered – Plateau government

The Plateau State Government, through its Growth Enhancement Support Scheme said it has registered 106,915 farmers in the first phase ofthe 2013 farming season in sixteen Local Government Areas of thState.

Mr Daniel Kakwi, the Director, Plateau State Green House of theFederal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development,FMARD, told

journalists on Friday, 10, May, 2013, in Jos.

According to him, the registration took place in 16 out of the 17 Local Government Areas in the state, adding that registration could
not hold in Wase Local Government Area, due to security challenges.

It would be recalled that, Wase Local Government Area had suffered civil unrest in the past two months, but it is relatively peaceful
now.

The Director attributed the low figures to insufficient forms, adding that the forms allocated to Plateau finished within three to four days of commencement of the exercise.

He explained that, “The turnout of farmers for the GES registration in Plateau was overwhelming; we exhausted our forms within just four days of commencing the exercise, with teeming farmers left uncaptured.

“We are receiving phone calls on daily basis from farmers who are yet to be captured, asking us when the second phase will commence”.

The Director assured farmers that FMARD was aware of the development and that steps were being taken to make more forms available.

Kakwi gave the breakdown of the figures as, 5,810 farmers wer registered in Barkin-Ladi LGA while in Bassa, Bokkos, Kanam Kanke and
Quanpan, 9, 878; 7, 967; 5, 988; 5, 552 and 6, 256 farmers were registered, respectively.

In Jos East, 5,356 farmers were registered, Jos North, 7, 559; Jos South, 6, 561; Langtang North, 5, 265; Lantang South 7, 253; Mangu, 8, 439; Mikang, 5, 493; Pankshin, 6, 890; Riyom, 5, 677 while 6, 971 were registered in Shendam.

Mrs Sarah Chuwang, who is the Chairperson of the Plateau State Chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria ,AFAN,, when contacted said that a lot of farmers would be left out if more forms were not provided on time.

Adding that, “Unless more forms are made available many farmers that have the desire to be registered will be left out. The shortage of
forms indicates that farmers had really come out to register or else there would have been more forms and fewer farmers.

He further explained that, “The registration is a continuous exercise.
I am assuring you that every farmer in Plateau will be registered.

Assuring the farmers that, “We have requested for additional 100, 000 forms and so far, 45, 000 have been provided. We are hoping that by next week, we will commence the second phase of the exercise.
