Akwa Ibom gas plant to generate 100 mmcf of gas daily

Investors in the Akwa Ibom Gas Plant say the first phase of the facility will be ready to supply 100 million metric cubic feet (mmcfpd) of gas per day.

The gas plant, supported by the Akwa Ibom Government under the Public Private Partnership (PPP), is a joint venture between Seven Energy and Frontier Oil Ltd.

Alhaji Abdullahi Bukar, the Director, Uquo Marginal Field Project, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday during a media tour of the facility at Uquo in Esit Eket LGA, Akwa Ibom.

He said that the project had two trains capable of producing 100 mmcfpd each.

Bukar said that the train1 would deliver supplies to Akwa Ibom IPP at Ikot Abasi. It has installed electricity generation capacity of 191 mega watts.

He said that the facility had provision for a 62 km pipeline from Uquo to Ikot Abasi where the power plant is located.

Bukar said the train 2 is a 37km pipeline from Uquo through Oron to Calabar.

It is capable of supplying gas to the plant with installed capacity for 560 mega watts into the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) in Calabar.

Bukar said that the Uquo gas processing facility and pipeline operations could provide employment in the local communities and boost power supply in the state.

According to him, the facility will lead to increased productivity in the state and environs as well as the development of the host communities.

Mr Ani Umoren, the Vice-President (Operation), Septa Energy, a subsidiary of Seven Energy, promoters of the gas project, said the company had agreement to supply product to Akwa Ibom IPP for 10 years.

Umoren said that the other contract was to supply Calabar NIPP for 20 years.

“The facility is capable of providing long term supply of gas to additional off takers for power generation and lower cost fuel for local industries,’’ Umoren said.

Umoren listed the challenges facing the company to include overseas sourcing of long lead items, regulatory bottlenecks in securing required approvals, community stakeholders’ relationship and high expectation.

He said that the company was committed to developing the gas infrastructure that Nigeria would need to achieve the objective of the gas master plan. (NAN)
