FCTA signs N1.2bn MoU with Capital Meat Company

Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide1The FCT Administration on Thursday signed a N1.25 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Capital Meat Processing Company for the establishment of a central abattoir at Tungan Maje.

The Minister of State for FCT, Ms Olajumoke Akinjide, who signed on behalf of the administration, said that 13.4 hectares would be used to construct the abattoir.

She said that the abattoir, expected to be completed within 12 months, would have the capacity to slaughter 500 cows and 1,500 sheep and goats per day.

“In the meat processing and fabrication section, about 40 tonnes of meat would be processed into about 10 products such as sausages, hotdogs, steaks and briskets.”

She said that the abattoir, when fully operational, was expected to create a total of 1,000 jobs for professionals such as veterinarians, para-veterinarians and livestock officers as well as butchers, technicians and labourers.

The minister said that five mini abattoirs had been established in Garki, Karu, Gwagwalada, Kubwa and Abaji to serve the FCT, until the completion of the central abattoir.

“As a result of the inadequacy of the plot in Idu, Tungan Maje was identified and approved by the FCT Executive in a meeting held on 15 Sept. 2008.”

She said that the approved company was in partnership with Indian Valley, a meat processing company based in Alaska, U.S.

She stressed that with the establishment of the meat processing facility, Nigeria would be taken to a higher level.

Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, the Chairman, Capital Meat Processing Company, signed on behalf of the company.

In his remark, Mutallab said the aim of establishing an abattoir of international standard in FCT was to ensure that the public consumed good quality meat and meat products.

He said that this would be achieved using acceptable hygienic process with strict adherence to quality and safe regulatory processes.

He said that the process to set up a world class abattoir started since 2007 but was not realised until now.

While assuring the minister that the facility would be of high standard, urged the government to ensure its replication iacross the country. (NAN)

    This is a good move in the right direction. For better health and better living, same facility has to established in our state capital cities.
