The Senate committee probing the management of pension funds, the same committee that ordered the arrest of Maina and later said they will leave him to God is now planning tougher measures against the Pensions Reform Task Team.

Earlier, a warrant was signed by the Senate President, Senator David Mark to the IG of police for the arrest of Abdulrasheed Maina over the probe of N195bn pension funds. The IG of police however, failed to arrest Maina.

In frustration, the committee decided to adjourn it’s sitting indefinitely with the plans to submit its report to the Senate.

Now, it appears the report by the committee is stirring dirty waters as the National Assembly is now warming up to take actions against Maina and his group after the Christmas break.

Responding to reporters, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba said the house is not helpless in the Maina situation. In his words, “Of course, we have recourse which will be applied as soon as we resume from the Christmas break.

“The Senate is certainly not helpless. No individual will be allowed to be bigger than our institutions, definitely not this Senate.”

Spokesperson for the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the House will decide on the matter when they return from break.

Abaribe said, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, was supposed to bring Maina to the National Assembly but Mina turned up later that same day, but came in late.

He said, “We will not say that the IG refused to carry out the orders because when the warrant for his arrest was signed, Maina suddenly showed up so that he did not need to be arrested again. But he came late and he was expected to return to the committee.”
