Nigeria receives $318 million funding from USAID to Prosecute Development Initiatives

The Federal Government yesterday signed a deal with the United States Agency for National Development (USAID) to develop key projects. The agreement was signed by the Minister of National Planning, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman.

The projects consist of the fortification of civil commitment for good governance, augmenting rural returns as well as jobs in aided areas and convalescing superior and competent basic education.

The Minister stated that Nigeria would spot the most suitable development rudiments to invest in.

He said: “We have reached a point where we are on all fours; one has to respect the requirements of the development needs of the country.

“Nigeria needs to play a significant role in defining what the priority is and the strategy and the areas that the assistance has to go into…Some people even laugh and ask why is Nigeria taking such money, people think that we are a rich country, we are not rich but we are not poor either. What is important is that the addition to the much we have would be utilised for the development of the country,” he added.

Meanwhile the U.S ambassador to Nigeria Terrence McCulley stated that “the U.S. government, through the USAID, will provide nearly $340 million in assistance from now till next year, to support Nigeria’s development efforts.”

The deal is a component of the over N2 trillion 2010 planned involvement fund union the USAID signed to sustain the development of skills acquisition, enhanced facility, excellent basic education, health care services as well as agriculture.

The funds would facilitate the reinforcement the facility of the states with local governments to successfully administer education, services and support the designed revitalization of agriculture, stated Mrs. Affiong Usen Effiong of the Information Unit of the Commission.
