National Assembly Resumes Today as N5000 Note, Other Pressing Issues on Agenda

Lawmakers at the National Assembly

The world’s highest paid lawmakers are set to reconvene sitting today, after two long months of recess. The issues on hand in Nigeria are myriad and touch every area of national life.

Topping the list on the agenda of the lawmakers are said to be:

  1. The planned introduction of the N5,000 note by the Central Bank of Nigeria;
  2. Deliberations over the passing of the Petroleum Industry Bill;
  3. The N1.2 trillion oil subsidy fraud;
  4. The 2012 budget performance;
  5. the 2013 budget;
  6. Selection of new Defense and Power ministers;
  7. The $5 billion fine imposed on Shell.

The House of Representatives had threatened to impeach President Jonathan, if certain levels of budget performance had not been attained by the time of their resumption (today). The threat is ever more present as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has said impeachment proceedings may commence without judicial interference.

The lawmakers are also expected to call the Central Bank of Nigeria to order over its unilateral decision to overhaul the national currency system without first seeking approval from the legislative body.

Also on the agenda is the 2013 budget, which some expect may be tendered to the National assembly’s chambers today.

Senators are also expected to screen candidates for the position of minister of defense and power following the sack and resignation of the former ministers who occupied those cabinet positions.
