Power Supply Drops by 1000 Megawatts

Former Power Minister, Barth Nnaji

The quantum of power supply being generated in the country has dropped by 1000 megawatts in less than two weeks after former Minister of Power, Barth Nnaji was removed from office.

The situation is said to have been compounded last Saturday when over 800 megawatts was lost from the national grid. Some of the power stations said to be responsible for the drop include Geregu power station in Kogi State where over 200 megawatts were lost as a result of gas shortages.

Okpai power station in Delta also shed 190 megawatts, dropping to 276 megawatts, whilst Sapele power station dropped from 180 megawatts to zero.

Omotosho power station shed about 60 megawatts, whilst the Egbin power station in Lagos saw its output fall from 900 megawatts to 453 megawatts. Egbin is the biggest power station in the country. The shortfall is being blamed on the unavailability of gas.

Sources in the power ministry are also blaming the drop in performance on the absence of the former minister, Barth Nnaji. Nnaji is said to have held the CEOs of all the power companies severally responsible for the quantum of power generated and transmitted in the country. The CEOs who stepped up their performance when Nnaji was present are said to have slacked off again in his absence.

“You know the ministry had signed service level agreements with all the CEOs and the minister had an effective monitoring mechanism to ensure that output was raised and sustained.

“But without anyone breathing down their necks, most of them are beginning to relax; that may be the reason we are beginning to experience epileptic power supply again. In addition, the dry season is not yet upon us yet, so we should be edging up to 5,000MW by now, not retrogressing,” a source told Thisday.

    Absolutule false reporting. A negative and baseless reporting is always credited to an unknown source. The genuie source is at NCC Oshogbo or any area Transmission Office. Facts can also be veriffied at most PHCN Zonal Headquaters. If you don’t have fuel in your car, do you blame the car manufacturer? Support and encourage the new (acting) Minister and give him good and reliable report instead of what he can debunk at the call of a number. At any rate, he should be fed with daily load availability and that is a matter of right.
