Members of the flying public are organizing boycotts against embattled Dana Airlines to protest the lifting of its suspension by the Federal Government yesterday.

Members of the public had wanted Dana Airline to be suspended indefinitely and forced to stop operating, however the government lifted the suspension only ninety-eight (98) days after one of the air carrier’s planes crashed in Lagos killing 153 persons.

The announcement of the return of Dana was made by the Federal minister of Aviation on social netwroking site Facebook. According to the statement, “The Federal Government has lifted the suspension of the Operating Licence of Dana Airline. This follows government’s satisfaction with the air-worthiness of the airline after a rigorous technical, operational and financial audit of the airline.

“By this development, Dana Airline is free to resume its normal commercial flight operations. Government will, however, continue to strengthen its oversight and regulatory functions to ensure that all airlines operating in the country, including Dana, adhere strictly to safety procedures as required by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act and all other relevant local and international regulations that ensure and promote sustainable air safety.”

Speculations are running wild that Dana Air will be absolved of all crimes, as former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida is said to own a huge stake in the airline. Sources say intensified lobbying by the ex-President has caused the Presidency to soft-pedal on its investigation, paving the way for the exoneration of Dana from any wrongdoing in the tragic events that saw many lose their lives prematurely.

In reaction to another unpopular government decision, social media activists have begun to launch a campaign calling for the boycott of the airline. The boycott will undoubtedly bolster the competition, as Arik and Aero are running a quasi-duopoly of air services in the country.

Aero, a company known for affordable flight plans via online booking channels has increased the price of all its tickets from 50% to 80% due to the reduction of competition in the industry.
