Subsidy Arrears: Depot Owners Begin Strike Today

The Jetty and Petroleum Tank Farm Owners of Nigeria (JEPTFON) have threatened to commence their strike action today in order to protest against the failure of the Federal Government to pay them subsidy arrears owed their members to the tune of several billions of Naira.

According to members of JEPTFON, the failure by the government to pay the subsidy arrears represents a breach of contract.

“Until the above demands are met, the association has no option than to shut down its operations nationwide and suspend workers with effect from July 23,” a JEPTFON statement said.

The JEPTFON strike could lead to fuel scarcity nationwide, and cause an economic shutdown in some of the country’s biggest commercial nerve centres.

The Ministry of Finance said it had paid all subsidy arrears on June 20th, and has not responded to the threat by the jetty and depot owners.

The President, JEPTFON, Mr. Ufeanyi Uba,confirmed that the strike would commence as planned today. He added, however, ““We have been invited for a meeting by the Ministry of Labour on Monday. Some of our members will be there tomorrow for the meeting.”
