US Seizes $ 1,000,000 from Alamieyeseigha under Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative

The United States Justice Department has seized $ 400,000 from former Bayelsa State governor and Presidential adviser, DSP Alameieyeseigha. The seizure came in the form of a forfeiture execution order, and also targets a $ 600,000 home owned by the former governor in Maryland, USA. The home is in the same area where other Nigerian politicians with questionable sources of income also own several homes.

The Justice department is calling the forfeiture order a landmark victory under a new initiative aimed at seizing US assets bought by the proceeds of corruption.

According to a press release by US Assistant  Attorney General Lanny Breuer the seizure sends a strong message about the US no-nonsense policy stance on corruption.

He said, “With a declared income of less than $250,000, Mr. Alamieyeseigha accumulated millions of dollars worth of property over a six-year period, today’s announcement – the first forfeiture judgment obtained under our Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative – sends a powerful message about the United States’ commitment to rooting out corruption far and wide.”

Alamieyeseigha’s troubles with foreign law enforcement began in 2005, when he was arrested by the London Metropolitan Police in Heathrow and found to have $1,600,000 in cash in his house. He was the then governor of Bayelsa state and current President Jonathan was then serving as his deputy.
