GE not constructing power plants in Nigeria – Power Ministry

According to a statement from the Ministry of Power, General Electric will not be constructing power generation plants in the country.

The Minister’s office released a statement in order to clarify misleading media reports that stated GE was constructing power plants in the country.

GE has not stated it wants to construct a 10,000 Mega Watt plant, however GE says it is willing to supply its turbines capable of delivering up to 10,000 Mega Watts of electricity.

The statement says, “As a show of support for the government power sector reforms, GE has also pledged to take up a minority interest in emerging power generation companies that employ its technology under this arrangement.”

Other key excerpts from the statement, “General Electric has not offered on its own to construct a power plant in Nigeria. The company is not in the business of constructing power plants anywhere in the world but, among other things, manufactures turbines which are a key component of power generation.”

Also of interest the statement, in a reference to a meeting held with Turkish ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Ali Rifat Koksal, it revealed Barth Nnaji did not “solicit any customers for any company willing to invest in Nigeria”.
