Imoke donates land, cars to Labour Unions

The Cross River state Governor, Liyel Imoke on Wednesday donated a land for the construction of a Nigeria Labour Congress secretariat in the state as well as two pick up vans and a bus.

The governor while speaking at the May Day Celebrations which held at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar, said that the gesture was evidence of his administration’s determination to giving prompt attention to labour issues and its desire to adequately reposition the state.

He explained that the pick-ups were for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) respectively while the bus was for the Nigerian Pensioners Association to aid them in running their affairs throughout the state.

Speaking on the occasion, the State Chairman, NLC, Comrade Njom Nyambi drew the attention of the state government to the non-payment of arrears of PAYE Tax as approved by the Federal Government and expected to have taken effect from October 2012 in the state.

Implementations of 27.5 percent Teachers Specific Allowances, 5 percent annual increase to civil servants, 30 percent CONHESS to Nurses and Medical Health Workers in the state, regularization of payment of Pension Allowances among others were also brought to the fore.

He also called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency resettle the displaced Bakassi people to a place of their choice.

Some retirees who spoke with Channels Television described life after retirement as a different phase entirely, different from looking up to the end of the month for their monthly stipends.

According to one of them, government should encourage investment in Agriculture, as a venture to fall back to, after retirement, as this has kept him going, fifteen years after service.
