36 ships laden with goods land at Lagos Ports

About 36 ships loaded with various products are expected to berth at the nation’s seaports situated in Lagos, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has said.

The NPA made this known through its daily publication, the ‘Shipping Position,’ which was made available to newsmen in Lagos.

It said the ships were being expected to berth at the ports from this weekend up till April 7, 2015.

A breakdown of the daily shipping position produced by the authority INDICATED that 14 of the ships would sail into the ports with containers, while 11 others are expected to come in laden with petroleum products.

The petroleum products include base oil, petrol, kerosene, diesel and aviation fuel.

Other products being expected as disclosed by the NPA include general cargo and food products. The food products which are to come in seven ships include bulk sugar, buckwheat and frozen fish, while four ships would bring in general cargo.

The management of the authority, which presently has Mallam Habib Abdullahi as its MANAGINGDirector said 12 ships had already arrived at the Lagos ports with food and petroleum products.

It said that the petroleum products include kerosene, petrol and aviation fuel, while the food products include rice in bags and soya beans.

Meanwhile, NPA has procured two new tug boats to enhance logistics operations and efficiency in the nation’s seaports.

The two 60-tons buller-pull tug boats are equipped with state of the art, fully computerised engines, to meet the increasing demands of critical stakeholders, within the Lagos Pilotage District.

The procurement of the two tug boats was in line the promise of the NPA MANAGING director,  Abdullahi during the second year anniversary of the present management’s administration  in Lagos last year.

It was gathered that once the two new tug boats procured through tenders, were effectively deployed, a significant reduction may come to end the present complaints of tugs insufficiency, within the Lagos ports.

The two tug boats, with one of them christened “Uromi”, have twin fire fighting pumps, with a reach above 300 meters and the flow is over 600 cubic meters per hour of water and foam, making it the strongest equipment in its category in the country.  Presently, the biggest tugs in Lagos have capacity not beyond 45- ton buller-pulls, while the biggest in Port Harcourt pilotage district, might not be up to 50-ton buller pulls.

The General Manager, Marine and Operations, Mr. Adamu Goje, said he was happy now that the tug boats would effectively boost the NPA  with the capacity to contain fires, in case of emergency.

“This is good. At least, if we have an emergency any time now, we can just deploy these, and be rest assured, that we can contain it”, he said.
