Nigeria Freight Forwarders Raises Concern Over Seaports Concessionaires
The president of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Mr Eugene Nweke expressed his concern about the secrecy of the agreements between the Federal Government and the various concessionaires at the nation’s seaports.
The ports were concessioned in 2006 under the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo, under the reform programme, the concessionaires who benefited from the exercise handle all cargoes coming into the country, a function that was under the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
However, Many industry operators have described the concessioning exercise as not transparent enough, and have called for the agreement to be made public.
Nweke stated that said that since the port concessioning, the agreement between the government and the terminal operators that benefited from the reform exercise has been made secret. Therefore as much as the freight forwarders want the agreement to be made public, the media should champion the publication for the sake of public interest.
