NFF picks Stephen Keshi

The Technical Committee of the Nigerian Football Federation has confirmed Stephen Keshi as the next coach of Nigeria, but only on an interim basis. After Samson Siasia’s dramatic sack last week, the Technical Committee was given the task of selecting the next Head Coach of the Super Eagles. Although there were a lot of foreigners who showed interest and even a lot others who were on the NFF’s radar, they eventually settled for Keshi, because of financial constraints.

In that light, they also recommended that Keshi be given a six-month contract. For those six months, he will be earning N3million naira. His pay packet will be increased to match Siasia’s N5million naira, only if and when the contract is confirmed and he is made the permanent boss. Keshi will not also be given all the powers his predecessor has given.

“Siasia was allowed a free hand, and see where that got us. Keshi will be monitored even though he will take most of the final decisions,” a top official of the NFF said.

Keshi captained the Nigerian team to 1994 World Cup. By the time he hung his boots, he had played in five different African Cup of Nations tournaments, winning the 1994 edition. After his club career in Europe, Keshi went into coaching. He got himself educated in coaching profession in the United State of America (USA). He has coached Togo for two years and qualified them unexpectedly for their first ever World Cup in Germany in 2006. He was however replaced by Otto Pftiser before the tournament. He had before that time worked with Amodu Shuaibu when he was in charge of the Nigerian national team between 2001 and 2002
