Lagos Airport still busiest as Bielderman becomes NAHCO CEO

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos remained the busiest air transport facility with 1,683,375 passengers in the first quarter of the year, representing 49.27 per cent of the total traffic recorded at the airport, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The Abuja International Airport is the second busiest with 907,989 passengers, representing 26.57 per cent of total traffic within same period.

This statistics was revealed as the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) announced the appointment of Mr. Norbert Bielderman as its acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer. The current MD/CEO, Mr. Kayode Oluwasegun-Ojo, whose contract expires on March 31, 2015, has proceeded on leave.

NAHCO, popularly called nacho aviance, has conveyed the information to the regulators in line with their rules and regulations and applied to publish it to the stakeholders

The NBS, in its summary report of passenger traffic for 2010-2013 and first quarter 2014, stated that of the 3,416,977 passengers using Nigerian airports in the first quarter of this year, 2,352,224 or 68.84 per cent was engaged in domestic travel while 1,064,753 or 31.16 per cent embarked on international trips.

“This is very similar to the share of 68.81 per cent observed for domestic passenger traffic on average in 2013,” it noted.

It said for domestic flights Murtala Muhammed airport had 898,896 passengers or 38.21 per cent of the total traffic while Abuja recorded 701,249 passengers or 29.81 per cent  of the traffic as well as Port Harcourt which had a significant number of 274,186 passengers or 11.66 per cent of all passenger traffic. Owerri Airport in Imo state had 75,356 passengers or 3.20 per cent of the total.

On the international front, passenger traffic was dominated by Lagos, accounting for 784,479 passengers or 73.68 per cent of all internationally bound passenger traffic passing through the airport.

Abuja also ranked second, although with a lesser number of 205,740 passengers or 19.42 per cent of total passengers on the foreign route.

Only Kano and Port Harcourt international airports had portions of the total of over 1 per cent, with 37,261 passengers or 3.50 percent of the total flying through Kano and Port Harcourt with 26,314 passengers or 2.47 per cent of the international total. International airports in Calabar, Ilorin, Kaduna, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Minna and Katsina recorded no passengers traveling internationally in the first quarter of 2014, the statistical agency stated.

NAHCO has conveyed the information on the appointment of Bielderman to the regulators in line with their rules and regulations and applied to publish it to the stakeholders.

THISDAY checks revealed that the appointment of the new chief executive is in line with the corporate governance framework approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which emphasises that succession plan must be in place for all exiting directors.

In a letter conveying its approval to the board of the company dated October 23, 2014, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) stated: “We have received your letter dated today, 23rd October, 2014 in which you notified the Exchange of the appointment of Mr. Norbert Bielderman as acting Managing Director of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc.”

The letter notified the company that the new information has been transmitted to the market operators and uploaded on the NSE X-Issuer. It added that nahco aviance could proceed to publish the information to its stakeholders.

Until his appointment, Bielderman was the Executive Director, Operations, for the company.
