NCC to set up centre for multimedia production

The Nigerian Communication Commission plans to establish a centre of excellence that will build the capacity of the country in multimedia productions

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, disclosed this at the third edition of Friends of Nollywood organised in Abuja on Friday night by the Association of Movie Producers.

Juwah, who was represented at the ceremony by Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Tony Ojobo, said its relationship with the movie industry articulated in a partnership between its Digital Bridge Institute, Harvard University and the Georgia Institute of Technology had been very productive.

According to him, the centre of excellence will aid the production of digital video, animation for entertainment and advertising, multimedia cartography, multimedia communications and virtual reality among others.

He said, “Through the DBI, plans are underway to establish centre of excellence for Multimedia Computing at the Lagos campus. We recognise that there is limited application of ICT technologies in the movie industry today, especially in productions within Nigeria.

“This centre will give us the opportunity to improve human capacity, build ICT skills, provide multimedia training materials, and attract appreciable application of ICT in our film production as the centre will be fully equipped with editing suites and modern film production facilities.”

Juwah added that the commission’s commitment to supporting and partnering with Nollywood was due to its belief that it has greater and more rewarding digital future and that Nollywood would soon find bedrock within the framework of its broadband expansion programme.

He said, “The auctioning of the slot for wholesale broadband on 2.3GHz spectrum band was successful and we have extended invitation for tenders for infrastructure provisions in Lagos and North Central zones of the country.

“Our focused implementation of a robust broadband network to avail affordable broadband services across the length and breadth of this country is expected to contribute to improving distribution, content marketing, protection of intellectual property in the industry and many benefits far too many to mention.”

The NCC boss said the partnership which the regulatory agency had forged with the movie industry was because of the potency of the industry in projecting Nigeria’s image and the leveraging possibilities which ICT offers to the movie industry.
