Turkey, Nigeria bilateral trade volume still low – Envoy

The Turkey Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Mustafa Pulat, has said that at $1.5bn, the bilateral trade between his country and Nigeria is very low.

According to him, the figure does not represent the potential of both countries with a relationship dating back to 1962 when the Turkish embassy was established in Nigeria.

Pulat spoke at a Turkish construction forum in Lagos, organised by the Turkish Ministry of Economy and Turkish Embassy in Abuja, to enhance cooperation between Nigeria and Turkey.

He said the construction industry was among strategic sectors which could enhance the bilateral economic and investment relations between the two nations.

He said Turkish construction sector was prominent in the world in terms of the total size of its projects abroad adding that the sector was the engine of Turkey’s economy, which had grown very fast in the last 20 years.

“Turkish construction companies are famous with their high-level quality and hi-tech production and relatively fair prices that they offer,” he said.

He said Turkey welcomed Nigeria’s recent economic growth which demonstrated the potential of the country to foreign investors.

According to him, the growth calls for the enhancement of infrastructure including new roads, railways, subways and energy plants, as well as modern apartment to increase the living standards of the people.
