Immigration tragedy: NITDA urges youths to explore IT

The acting Director General, National Information Technology Development Agency, Dr. Ashiru Daura, has urged Nigerian youths to embrace information technology and explore its potential for self-employment and job creation.

Daura spoke to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of a capacity building workshop on business process outsourcing for unemployed youths.

The NITDA boss said it was wrong for young people to think that the government would provide all the jobs required in the country and urged them to embrace IT so as to be able to create employment opportunities for themselves and those around them.

He spoke against the background of the death of some applicants in stampedes that followed the attempt of the Nigeria Immigration Service to conduct tests for potential recruits across the country on Saturday.

Answering questions on the use of IT in solving the huge unemployment challenge in the country, Daura said it had become imperative for the youth to model several American entrepreneurs who had made so much money from IT.

He said, “Information technology has the capability of providing jobs and creating wealth. Some of the youngest millionaires we have in the world today are all in information technology, including the founders of Google, Facebook and the like. They all made it from information technology.”

“There is one wrong concept that we have. Most of our youths think that they can only get employed in government establishments. In many other places, the government is not the leading employer. The private industries lead in many other climes.

“Our youths have to develop the attitude to create jobs for themselves. IT, especially software development, has the capacity to give people jobs. It is an intellect-based work and you know the current economy is a knowledge-based economy. With knowledge, somebody can create millions of dollars like the Internet billionaires.”

On the BPO training, Daura said it was organised to equip the youth with the capacity to enhance their capability in the burgeoning outsourcing industry.
