Oil, gas producing communities give firm seven days ultimatum

HOST Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas, Edo State, have given a seven-day ultimatum to Zakhem Construction Nigeria Limited, handling the laying of gas pipelines from Oben to Kogi State, within which to respond to their letters bordering on their social and economic wellbeing or be forced to stop further work on the project.

Representatives of the host communities, who staged a peaceful demonstration, yesterday, at the Edo State construction site of the company in Obayantor, Ikpoba/Okha Local Government Area of the state, accused the company of neglect and disregard for the rights of the communities as well as its non-compliance with the provisions of Nigeria Local Content Act, Nigeria Land Act and other extant laws.

In the protest letter by Dr. Sam Igbineweka, Chairman and others, copied to President Goodluck Jonathan, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Inspector – General of Police and 13 others, they asked the company to immediately tender an unconditional apology to host communities in the state for the neglect, disregarding their rights and expectations in its implementation of the Oben- Kogi State gas pipelines project and the Escravos-Lagos Gas line project.
