We will stick to 2.3GHz licensing timetable – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission has said it will stick to the timetable for the licensing of the Wireless Wholesale Access Service Licence that will utilise the 2.3GHz frequency on offer by the Federal Government.

The Special Assistant to the Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Mr. Okoh Aihe, stated this in an interview with our correspondent.

Okoh said with the international dimension of the auction process, the regulatory agency was going to stick to the timetable already released to enable all stakeholders to plan their participation in the process.

The sale of the 2.3GHz frequency to an Internet operator is expected to give life to the broadband vision of the government as well as galvanise the business of Internet Service Providers.

Although 156 companies hold the ISP licences issued by the NCC at various times, the business is dying. This follows the venture of the digital mobile operators into Internet services.

Most licensed ISPs do not have the capacity to compete with GSM operators, who have spread and technology advantage over the traditional ISPs.

The advent of nationwide wholesale ISPs utilising 30Hz on the 2.3GHz frequency band is expected to revitalise the service providers.
