Sokoto earmarks N5.63bn for expansion of Asare water project

The Sokoto State Executive Council on Wednesday approved N5.63billion for expansion of the Asare Water Project in the state.

The state Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Shehu Dalhatu, made this known when he briefed newsmen on the outcome of the council’s meeting in Sokoto.

He said the project also entailed the drilling of additional bore holes expected to provide additional 40 million gallons of water per day to some parts of Sokoto metropolis and its environs.

He named the benefitting areas of the project as Mana, Runjin Sambo, Mabera, Rugar-Wauru and other parts of the city.

The Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Danladi Bako, said the council had approved the computerisation of the state civil service at the cost of N81million.

The Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Yusuf Danchadi, said the council also approved the upgrade of Government Day Secondary School, Gumbi, Wamakko Local Government Area, to Senior Secondary School.

The project, the commissioner said, would be executed at the cost of N223 million.

He said the project included the construction of additional classrooms, hostels, mosque, and perimeter fencing.

“Already, 30 per cent down payment had been approved for the contractor. The project is expected to be complete in six months’’, he said.

The Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, said the council also approved the upgrade of Silame Primary Health Centre to the status of General Hospital at the cost of N132 million.

He said additional wards, perimeter fencing, staff quarters and a laboratory would be constructed.

He added that the council approved the construction of new central mosques at the cost of N409 million at Farfaru and Minanata areas in Sokoto metropolis.

“Already, 30 per cent down payment has been approved for the contractors. We expect that the project will be completed in six months”, he said.
