FG to review public service reforms

The Federal Government has unveiled a plan to review the national strategy on public service reforms in line with the current macro-economic realities.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Dr. Joe Abah, gave the hint in Abuja during an interview with our correspondent.

The current national strategy, which was formulated a few years ago by the bureau, had a short-term priority to tackle payroll fraud, remove ghost workers, facilitate a process of organisational restructuring, improve service delivery standards and start a process of pay reform that would provide incentives for good quality staff in the service.

But Abah said that since public service reform was an ongoing programme, there was a need for the bureau to provide guidance on how to restructure ministries, departments and agencies, especially in the area of planning and budgeting.

This, he noted, would help to ensure that Nigerians get value for money in all the programmes of government.

He said, “We hope to provide guidance early in the new year on how to reform parastatals because it is at the parastatals that Nigerians experience government. It’s not ministries.

“Beyond that, we have a national strategy for public service reforms and the bureau was instrumental in developing it. We are refreshing that strategy and updating it to make sure that it focuses on current realities.

“We are also doing an analysis to look at the reforms that have happened in the last five years; which ones have worked and have not worked? Why have they worked and why haven’t they worked?
