Foreign airlines kick against relocation of offices

Foreign airlines have kicked against the relocation of their offices to the third floor of the Muritala Mohammed International Airport, stating that the action is not in their interest.

The President, Association of Foreign Airlines Representatives of Nigeria, Mr. Kingsley Nwokoma, who said this in a statement on Sunday, noted that the stakeholders were not carried along by the relevant authorities before the move was embarked upon.

“We are not happy about this; we were not carried along and we feel it is not acceptable and government should know that without the core stakeholders in this industry, nothing moves. If, today, the airlines decide collectively that we have an issue and we are not coming in, everybody will sit up and questions will start coming up,” he said.

He also lamented the level of obsolete avio bridges at the international airport and called for their replacement, noting that they were an embarrassment to the nation.

He said, “If you look at the avio bridges, we still have the old ones that have been there since the eighties. They are leaking; they are not in good conditions. We expect that those avio bridges should have been changed in line with the innovations going on around the airport.

“There was a recent release on airport ratings and none of our airports made the first 10 in Africa and it is all these structures that are used as a yardstick. The avio bridges should be changed.”

While calling for the installation of closed circuit TV cameras around the airport as a result of security challenges in the country, Nwokoma said there was the need for proper illumination of the airport at night, especially at the air side.
