Enugu workers urge government to revamp moribund industries

Enugu State workers, Wednesday, called on the state government to reactivate some its industries that have gone moribund.

The workers, who made the appeal at the Michael Okpara Square during the Workers’ Day celebration also called for upward review of their salaries in order to produce an acceptable salary chart.

Chairmenn of Nigeria Labour Congress,NLC,and Trade Union Congress in Enugu State, Comrade Chumaife Nze and Igbokwe Chukwuma Igbokwe, in their separate speeches respectively called on the government to revamp ESBS, Government Printing Press/Daily Star, stating that the revamping of the parastatals would provide gainful employment for the unemployed youth.

Nze used the opportunity to draw the attention of the government to the plight of volunteer workers, disclosing that they were demoralised because they had not been paid the 18,000 monthly stipends promised them since they were employed years ago.

On his part, Igbokwe noted that workers of the state public service were retiring en mass , alleging that over 70% of the present civil servants would be retiring from service in the next ten years.

According to him, if recruitment was not done now, “we may be having a civil service filled with inexperienced staff”.
