Lagos won’t take over burnt Alade Market –LASEMA

Lagos State Government yesterday said it had no plans to close and take over Alade Market at Allen Junction, Ikeja, which was gutted by fire on Sunday night. It, however, promised to investigate the cause of the inferno and evaluate losses to forestall future occurrence.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this yesterday when he visited the market. Oke-Osanyintolu said the government would not shut down the market, but would ensure the safety of lives and property of the traders. He said: “We are here to bring sanity. Government is not interested in closing your market; we are only here to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Tell the traders to cooperate with us in the enumeration of the victims.” Earlier, leader of the market, Mrs. Elizabeth Adenuga, appealed to the government to rehabilitate the damaged portion on time to allow the traders return to the market.

She said: “Many of the traders here are widows who rely on the daily opening of their market. Majority of them are bread winners in their families, government should please consider rehabilitation.”
