NAMA given high rating for the Airfield lighting of Lagos Airport

The completion of the Airfield lighting project for the Murtala Mohammed Internatiional Airport (MMI) known as the ‘Runway 18L’, an amazing blend of technology and innovation has been commended by practitioners in the Aviation Industry.

The group receiving accolades for this wonderful feat is the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency(NAMA), the body responsible for managing and coordinating activities and operations of the ‘Airspace Technology’.

Over time it seemed the project was not going to be completed, but the strategic and dynamic approach of the agency towards the project has given hope to an aviation industry that has gone through various travails and challenges this year.

With the completion, the Murtala Mohammed International Airport now wears a more global and sophisticated outlook like the airports in New York, London, Dubai, Tokyo, and Beijing, something Nigerians can be proud of.

Speaking on the project, the Managing Director of Arik Air Mr Chris Ndulue said the lighting was a good project and lamented the fact that it took some time for the project to be actualized.

He felicitated with NAMA by saying “I commend NAMA for providing the safety critical equipment. But it is unfortunate that we are celebrating what we should have taken for granted because ideally you cannot operate a runway without airfield lighting. Nigeria is too big for this. The equipment should have been installed a long time ago.”

Also a seasoned and renowned pilot Mr Uche Ojadi, expressed his joy over the airfield lighting at ‘Runway 18L’, he noted that despite the delays in the project he was happy, that NAMA had finally worked out the successful completion of the project.

Apart from the Lagos airport, three trailers of the airfield light are expected in January and they are to be deployed for the runways in Abuja, Kano and Yola airports in the new year. Former Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Mr Akin George said the ‘Airfield lighting’ project delay cost airlines a lot of money, but was happy with the new development.
