Nigeria backs UN sustainable energy resolution

The recent global declaration of a decade of sustainable energy between 2014 and 2024 by the United Nations General Assembly has received a maximum boost in Nigeria.

The Declaration for all has come at a crucial time the world needs a cleaner environment and more access to energy to boost its economy.

In 2011 the United Nations Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki Moon launched the United Nations Sustainable Energy for all Initiatives to coordinate efforts from all sectors in order to achieve sustainability worldwide.

The South Korean born leader of the United Nations set three objectives to be reached by 2030 namely; “Provision of universal energy access; doubling the rate of global energy efficiency improvement, and to double the share of renewable energy”

Under the Initiative, the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Chairman of the UN Energy, Kandeh Yumkella, will coordinate the activities of the Sustainable Energy for All initiative, while the President of the World Bank will co-chair the advisory board.

Speaking on the value and the relevance of the UN Sustainable energy declaration, the Chairman of the Pacific forum and Prime Minister of Cook Island,Mr Henry Puna stressed the fact that “Energy is inextricably tied to our economic growth and welfare and my fellow colleagues from around the Pacific have taken bold steps to unlock the door of dependency on fossil fuel.”

UN Secretary General Mr Ban Ki Moon believes that “there can be no sustainable development without sustainable energy”. This assertion has been embraced by Global leaders who realize how crucial access to energy is in realising the development and transformation of the energy sector.

Nigeria was among the African Nations that endorsed the new UN declaration at the 7th Summit of ACP Heads of States and Government In Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where the declaration of Sustainable energy for All was acknowledged.
