Rwanda Leads Africa in Broadband Technology

As an attestation  to its robust, dynamic and innovative policy and strategy on developing its Information Technology Sector to be viable and attractive in the globe Rwanda  has been rated the number one nation with the fastest speed in Broadband speed in Africa.

This is according to Statistics from Ookla’s Net Index and  the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) report on Broadband technology in Africa recently, going ahead of Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa in the index.

The Analysis revealed that the Central African Country currently has a download speed of up to 7.28 Mbps, which is more than double the 3.28 Mbps it had six months ago in terms of Broadband speed technology.

It is not therefore surprising that Rwanda is a ahead because President Paul Kagame had set the Information Technology sector development and reform as one of its key plans and priorities ensuring that the former war-torned nation gains competitive edge in a globe that has been driven by Cyber technology.

Rwanda’s Minister of Youth and ICT Mr Jean Nsengimana was quoted by IT News Africa as saying ‘This shows that our efforts are paying off  although we still need to do more in the area of affordability of Broadband’.

The Nation currently relies on three submarine fibre optic cable systems for Internet connections such as the East Africa Submarine Cable System(EASSY) to drive its broadband connectivity and accessibility.

In the rankings Libya is Second with 5.12 Mbps,  Ethiopia  third with 4.82 Mbps, while Ghana moved down from second position to the fourth and Kenya fifth position, Nigeria is presently  at the 13th position rating.

This obviously explains the new aggressive drive of the Governments of Nigeria and Kenya in their Broadband technology plan, devising new strategies and roadmaps and also engaging the private sector to unlock the potentials that abound in driving an effective broadband system.
