Fed Govt inaugurates advisory committee on Consumer Protection Council

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Advisory Committee on Products, Services, Monitoring and Registration Programme (ProServe).

Minister of Commerce and Industry, Jubril Martins-Kuye, inaugurated the Public-Private Partnership Initiative of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) for the Federal Government.

The committee is chaired by a former Chief Justice, Mohammed Uwais, and has the following as members: former Minister of Industry, Mrs. Nike Akande; Presiding Justice Court of Appeal, Enugu, Justice Amina Adamu; Monsignor Matthew Hassan Kukah, Prof. Felicia Monye of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and John Ejoha Odah of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Others are: Chief Alexanda Chika Okafor,Chairman/founder Chicason Group of Companies, Prof. Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip, Judge of the National Industrial Court and Dr. Ben Aghazu, Co-ordinator, East and West Africa, Rotary International.

In a statement, Martins-Kuye commended the programme initiators for holding the event. He assured the public that the government would support the partnership, particularly as it would impact on the economy positively.

Speaking, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Conswatch, Dr. Stephen Dike, disclosed that ProServe solution is derived from the thesis that those producers, manufacturers and distributors of products and service providers that cheat or provide sub-standard products and services to consumers do so with the primary motive of making profit.

‘’Therefore, if the illicit profit motive is removed, there would be less cheating and incompetence in the market place and market forces will compel competition by producers to please and satisfy the consumer,” he said.

He added that the ProServe is a market driven, self-regulatory approach to minimise fraud and incompetence in the marketplace through a number of integrated solutions.
