Road Contractors Directed to Halt Usage of Kerosene

Mike Onolememen, Minister of Works, in a bid to improve the quality of road construction in the country has called upon all contractors handling road projects to utilize bitumen emulsion instead of kerosene.

The minister gave the instruction during a Workshop on Quality Control in Abuja on Thursday, according to a statement from the ministry.

The Minstry has also created a department of Material Geotechnics and Quality Control in order to enforce the directive.

The department will advise, closely monitor and ensure that materials used in the construction of federal roads are of the highest quality and meet the necessary standards specified for them.

The Minister disclosed that the ministry had accepted that cutback bitumen be replaced with bitumen emulsion in highway construction for prime coats, tack coats and surface dressings.

He added that the measure was environmentally friendly, cost effective and would save millions of litres of solvent such as kerosene, which would otherwise have been utilised for the preparation of cutback.

   Isn’t it a shame that there are no standards for road construction in Nigeria? No standards for expressways, no standard for inner city roads. Each contractor builds the road as he deems fit.
   Without a set standard, we are not aspiring to improve on anything.
