Presidency Orders Chevron to Engage in Corporate Social Responsibility in Niger Delta
Despite the great environmental damage done to the Nigerian environments primarily in the South-south region where crude oil is mined, many multi-national companies are sleeping on their duty to be good corporate citizens and provide basic services to their host communities.
Whilst it is not the duty of corporations to take the place of government in providing basic amenities to the citizens, a Good Samaritan need not be told when to do charitable deeds. In the absence of this, the Nigerian government has ordered the management of Chevron to provide electricity from its Escravos facilities to the neighboring Ugborodo and Gbaramatu communities in Warri.
The directive came during negotiations with Ijaw/Itsekiri youth leaders, and Chevron management presided over by Vice-President Sambo.
The Niger Delta youth leaders have agreed to allow Chevron continue its activities in their communities if the electricity is provided.
Chevron has a capacity of 90 MegaWatts of Power, out of which is uses 40 Megawatts and then stores the rest, whilst neighboring communities have no electricity at all.
