NLC to tackle states on minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it is prepared to engage states in the implementation of the N18,000 National Minimum Wage.

NLC President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, who was represented by the National Secretary of the Bankers Union, Peter Oyele, disclosed this in Abuja yesterday at the Sixth Delegates’ Conference of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council.

He said: “We have appealed to the states to implement the new minimum wage. At the end of the day, we will know the states that will not be able to implement it directly or indirectly, so we will take it from there. But we cannot just say how we are going to do it right now. But NLC is very prepared to engage those states constructively on the implementation of the minimum wage.”

He said implementation has started at the national level, adding that President Goodluck Jonathan has given assurance that the Federal Government would pay the arrears.

Asked whether he has seen a copy of the signed new national minimum wage, he could not confirm nor actually deny seeing the new law, but he recalled that there was a tripartite agreement.
