Stakeholders call for investment in assets maintenance
Engineers and experts in assets maintenance and management have called for more investment in the sector in order to engender economic growth.
The Director, The Maintenance Institute, Africa, Mr. Jonathan David, stated at the first Africa maintenance and reliability conference, with the theme, ‘Propelling growth in Africa through maintenance and reliability excellence’, that for asset management to be successful, adequate maintenance of manpower and equipment needed to be put in place.
The Maintenance Planner, Lafarge Africa Plc, Mr. Tosin Ogunmola, said that the implementation of proper maintenance framework would eliminate high cost of rehabilitation or reconstruction.
“There is a need for a comprehensive infrastructure maintenance management system in order to have adequate value for investments in maintenance as provided for in the National Infrastructure Master Plan,” he said.
Ogunmola said that there was a need to apply best maintenance practices for infrastructure as well as providing maintenance measures in various organisations.
The Manager, Reliability Engineering and Asset Solution Centre at Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria Limited, Mr. Peter Idoko, said that the development of reliability engineering capability required training, certification, networking, coaching and mentoring.
According to him, deriving maximum value from production systems and the workforce in any company depends heavily on the reliability of the systems and the personnel involved in the operation.
The Shift Lead, Nestle Nigeria, Mr. Chukwuemeka Omerenna, stated that manufacturing processes were experiencing a setback in operations due to poor operator-driven mechanism, which had resulted in a drop in production output of every industry.
“The only way to prevent this is to channel the right people who are the end users of the machines,” he said.
