Budget: House Committees to submit reports latest Friday

By on February 26, 2016

The standing committees of the House of Representatives have been directed to submit their reports from the budget defence of the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) over which they had oversight to the committee on appropriation latest Friday.

This is as the House begins collation of all the reports ahead of harmonisation with the Senate.

The announcement was made by Speaker Yakubu Dogara, at plenary on Thursday, on behalf of the Appropriation Committee.

Briefing newsmen after plenary, the Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas, said the appropriation committee would cross check figures with the MDAs before the meeting with its Senate counterpart.

“We are working on the estimates sent to us by the President, and we are working with the Executive to ensure that these estimates are passed into law,” he said.

Namdas expressed appreciation that the National Assembly has not been accused of padding of the budget, allegations which have been confirmed by President Buhari.

“It is left to the Executive to deal with those involved in the padding, ours is to pass the budget estimate into law,” he added.

In another development, the lawmakers also directed the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to suspend its policy mandating motorists nationwide to install speed limiters in their vehicles.

The device, which the house described as an outdated technology, is procured for N36,000. It interacts with a vehicle’s engine to permit the attainment of a pre-programmed maximum speed.

The House therefore summoned the Corp Marshal/Chief Executive Officer of the corp, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi to explain why the policy should not be discontinued.

Hon. Phillip Shuaibu (Edo PDP) who sponsored the motion, noted that the device has been experimented and abandoned in some African country due to its disadvantages.
