NNPC sells petrol to IPMAN’s filling stations on credit

As part of its special intervention fuel supply across the country, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has commenced direct sales of petrol to filling stations owned by members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) on credit.

The corporation had dispatched 567 trucks nationwide on the eve of the Christmas in continuation of the special intervention fuel supply for the Yuletide season.

Speaking to journalists on Christmas Day during the monitoring of the sale of the products at official price in filling stations along Akute – Olambe Road in Ogun State, the Operation Controller of IPMAN, Mr. Mike Osatuyi stated that two trucks loaded with 73,000 litres of petrol were discharged by the NNPC in his filling station.

According to him, over 300 tankers were loaded in Capital Oil Depot in Lagos and dispatched to various IPMAN petrol stations across the country.

Osatuyi, who described the NNPC’s initiative as unprecedented, also called on the corporation to sustain the measure to ensure availability of products at normal price across the country.

He noted that IPMAN members control 87 per cent of the retail outlets in the country and thus have the capacity to wet the whole country with petrol if supplied by the NNPC.

Osatuyi further stated that the beneficiaries of the special fuel intervention are expected to pay for the products after two weeks.

“We want to appreciate the Federal Government of Nigeria because NNPC is giving us these products on credit. They loaded the products in trucks and sent them to us. So, there is no reason why we should not sell at official price. Now that the federal government, is ready to partner us, we are also ready to partner  them. We have the structure; we have the facilities and we are ready to go. This is not a matter of rhetoric. I am aware that quite a good number of IPMAN members have received the products because they loaded massively at Capital Oil,” Osatuyi explained.

“What the federal government  is doing in terms of PMS intervention scheme is commendable. This is unbelievable and we have never seen it before. But we have seen it now. We want NNPC and PPMC to sustain it. We as IPMAN is telling the government that we are going to surprise them now that they have agreed to partner us. We are not going to fail them.  This is what President Muhamadu Buhari is doing to alleviate the sufferings of the masses,” Osatuyi added.

Osatuyi, who was a former National Secretary of IPMAN further stated that the NNPC has the capacity to sustain the intervention measure to end the current fuel scarcity.

He, however,  insisted that the ultimate solution to the country’s perennial fuel crisis is full deregulation of the downstream sector and urged the present administration to deregulate the sector without further delay.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu had told THISDAY in a recent exclusive interview that the current crisis had forced the corporation to load petrol in trucks and send direct to filling stations owned by the major marketers.

“In some cases we are even trucking ourselves because some majors just refused to pick it up. As far as they are concerned, we should go and sort out our problems. So, we have situations where I have to take trucks and intervene in people’s filling stations and tell them that they are obliged to take my products because I need to service the country.  You can imagine this going on in the whole country,” he had said.
