ICT to generate 20% of Nigeria’s GDP by 2020 – NITDA

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has said given the rate of Information Communication Technology (ICT) development in NIgeria, by the year 2020, ICT will contribute 20per cent‎ to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Its Director General, Mr. Peter Jack stated this in Abuja at the Africa Information Technology Exhibition and Strategic Conference with the theme; “Africa and Emerging ICT Opportunities.”

According to him, the ICT sector is demonstrating dynamic growth in Africa and Afritex‎ 2015 was aimed at bringing together stakeholders from Africa and around the world to showcase latest technologies and innovations as well as discuss best practices in ICT world as it impact on Africa economy.

Jack said: “I’m saying by the year 2020  the contribution of ICT ‎to the GDP would have doubled from 10per cent to 20per cent, and by that time we are sure that the emphasis on oil will be grossly reduced .

“But other than that the young developers they are being exposed to investors, almost everybody here is asking; ‘can I invest in your business?, it is a very positive response.”

The DG, who described the event as a global concept as well as an exhibition, said that with the aspect of electoral process given a special focus at the event, he noted that by 2019 the country would be talking about e-voting.

He added: “We are optimistic that by the year 2019‎, we will be talking about e-voting, the necessary arms of government were here, the aspect of legal issues will be addressed so that by the time we are talking about the 2019 election we will be sure of e-voting.”

Speaking in the same vein, the Chairman Afritex,‎ Mr. Olusola Oworu said the annual event is a platform provided by the  company for all participants to gain exposure, knowledge and insights on ICT development.

He added that the company delivers ‎credible and information-rich content that inspire influential visitors to engage with exhibitors who can provide solution to meet their business needs.

Oworu emphasised that Nigeria and indeed Africa have become the focus of international players to explore opportunities in the sector, thereby utilising the potential of the market.

Afritex‎ through its platform, had been able to showcase softwares for medical solution, engineering services, and also e-commerce solution for tourism development, adding that the platform has helped to bringing these people together for Nigerians to be aware that these solutions are available in the country.
