Monitor imported lubricants – Kachikwu tells DPR, SON

By on November 26, 2015

The Department of Petroleum Resources and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria have been urged to monitor the influx of imported lubricants into the country due to the reported cases of substandard lubricants in the market.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who said this in a keynote address he delivered at the 2nd Nigerian Lubricants Summit in Lagos on Tuesday, also warned against the use of substandard lubricants by consumers.

Kachikwu, who was represented by the Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Retail Limited, Mr. Ladipo Fagbola, explained that the use of substandard lubricants should be discouraged because of its dangerous effects on equipment and machineries.

He, therefore, urged the DPR and SON to focus on imported lubricants as well as those produced locally to ensure that only standard products were sold in the market.

Also commenting on the dangers of using substandard lubes, the Chairman, Lubcon International Group, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim, argued that such products could cause accidents at the workplace and on the road if vehicles and machineries suddenly break down due to the use of fake lubricants.

He said the major challenge confronting stakeholders was the importation of poor quality base oil into the country, adding, “We need to prevent the country from becoming a dumping ground. Importation of processed lubricants is a big challenge to the sector.

“Innovation is key to industry growth and development, hence, the need for investment in research and development.”

Ibrahim noted that the effects of used lubricants on the environmental should be critically reviewed.

“I think there is a need for us to present a bill to the National Assembly on recycling of used lubricants in the country,” he said.
