Contractors must compulsorily test building materials — LSMTL

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory has advised the state government to consider making all building contractors in the state to subject their building materials to compulsory testing.

The Managing Consultant, LSMTL, Mr. Abel Famakin, said during the eighth year anniversary of the agency that this would reduce the incidence of building collapse in the state.

“Since the inception of this agency, no incidence of building collapse has been recorded from any of the buildings and materials it certified. Non-compliance to building standards and negligence by contractors have been responsible for the perennial building collapse in the state,” he said.

Famakin added that despite the fact that the agency was not empowered to enforce or sanction defaulters, it had in collaboration with the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Lagos State Building Control Agency sensitised members of the public to the importance of materials testing over the years.

He also appealed to building contractors, site engineers and the general public to always collect their materials test results in order to make strategic decisions on the actual result and the expected standard.
