Transport union plans mega filling stations

By on October 21, 2015

The National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos Council, is worried about the intermittent fuel crisis in the country, which often disrupts the operation of its members and the economy of the nation.

It has, therefore, commenced moves to establish mega filling stations to take care of its members anytime there is shortage in fuel supply.

The Chairman, Lagos Council, NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, stated this in Lagos on Monday after his election for a second term of four years.

He also promised that his administration would build an ultra-modern hospital to handle cases arising from road traffic accidents among commercial drivers.

Agbede, who spoke at the eighth quadrennial delegates’ conference of the Lagos NURTW, said his administration was also working on a number of measures to bring sanity to the activities of its members.

He, however, did not say the number of the filling stations being proposed and where specifically they would be located.

Agbede did not state if other commercial vehicle drivers such as the taxi operators would be allowed to buy fuel from the proposed filling stations.

Speaking on the hospital project, he said, “This administration will construct a hospital to take care of emergency cases among commercial drivers in the state. We will ensure that the hospital is well equipped with modern medical equipment and qualified personnel.

“The idea of our own hospital is based on the nature of our job, which makes our people prone to accidents. So, with the hospital of our own, our members will be getting prompt medical attention during emergency cases.”

He also promised that the state council of the NURTW under his leadership would partner the state government to ensure that peace continued to reign in all Lagos motor parks.

The President of the union, Alhaji Najeem Yasin, in a speech read on his behalf by his deputy, Mr. Joseph Aluanya, said he had been administering the union in line with the rule of law and constitutional provisions, which accounted for the peace the union had enjoyed in the last four years.

He urged the newly elected officers of the Lagos council to be fair to all and make justice their watchword in the discharge of their duties, warning that the national leadership of the union would not hesitate to deal with any member who failed to operate in accordance with the union’s constitution.

The Lagos State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Idowu Adelakun, commended the state council of the NURTW for conducting a hitch-free delegates’ conference.
