Stakeholders want standardisation of Nigerian products

Stakeholders from the organised private sector have called for the standardisation of made-in-Nigeria products in order to make them acceptable outside the country.

The stakeholders made the call at a seminar organised by the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture at Abeokuta on Wednesday.

The National President, NACCIMA, Chief Bassey Edem, and an international expert in conformity, calibration and metrology, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation’s National Quality Infrastructure Project, Dr. Shaukat Malik, said the time had come for players in the private sector to ensure that quality and safety of their products met international standards.

Edem, who was represented by the First Deputy National President of the association, Chief Alaba Lawson, said this had become necessary due to the banning of some Nigerian products by the European Union.

While speaking with journalists at the seminar, which drew participants from all the states in the country, Lawson described the banning of the Nigerian products as unfortunate.

She said “What we are trying to do is to organise the private sector players to wake up to their responsibility in assuring the quality of the products leaving the shores of Nigeria to the rest of the world.

Lawson said, “It is high time for us to wake up and make sure the products leaving Nigeria are of good quality and at the same time that they have all the essential infrastructure of the labels that they really need to promote these goods, so that they will be able to compete internationally with all other products either from Ghana, South Africa or anywhere else.

“It is very disheartening that products from Nigeria are being refused and sometimes they will say the products are banned.”
