The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has impounded over 1000 cartons of phones in Kano and arrested a Chinese woman, owner of the fake phone warehouse, Yi Fang Communication.

According to a statement from the organisation, the state’s head of SON, Yahaya Bukar, revealed the development to newsmen in Kano recently.

Bukar, according to the statement, stated that the agency’s enforcement team carried out the clampdown on the firm following a tip-off.

He said the action was necessitated by the discovery that the Chinese woman had been involved in the importation of substandard leading brands of phones into country.

Bukar said the SON team first stormed the warehouse for enforcement purposes, evacuated products worth over N150m and eventually arrested the woman.

“During the first visit, a total of 1003cartons of Techno and Geonee substandard phones were evacuated.

He explained that after testing, the phones failed the various basic parameters.

He said, “In addition, the phones are not registered or certified by SON. There is no required import documents on the product that can be retrieved from the importer by name, Xiulin popularly called “Sky” in Nigeria.”

He said that the confiscated phones would be destroyed after further laboratory analysis to confirm that they are fake and unsafe for use.
