NCS boss tasks officers on revenue generation

The Customs High Command has issued a marching order to men and officers of the service to increase their revenue generation or get the butts.

The order was issued amidst the fears that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), which is one of the major revenue generating agencies in the country, may not be able to meet its revenue target for the year.

This might also be a result of the uncertainty that characterised the 2015 general election, dwindling price of crude oil in the international market and low value of the naira to the USA dollars in recent times.

Already, fears are being expressed in some quarters that NCS may not meet up with its revenue target if the various Customs formations do not buckle up with their drive to generate revenue, curb smuggling and facilitate trade in the months ahead.

Apparently propelled by the grave reality of things in the service as he took over the reins of administration from the erstwhile Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), the Acting CGC, Dr. John Atte has directed all Customs Area Controllers (CAC) to meet their revenue targets.

Atteh in a statement issued in Abuja and signed on his behalf by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), NCS Headquarters, Abuja, Alhaji Adewale Adeniyi directed all CACs to increase their weekly average revenue from the current N13 billion to N35 billion.

Adeniyi, a Deputy Comptroller (DC) was quoted in the statement as saying that Atteh’s directive was sequel to what he called “a strategy session” of NCS management and CACs which took place at NCS Headquarters, Abuja.

“The session, which was presided over by Atte was convened to discuss various areas of revenue leakages and put in place measures to plug them.  Atte directed the immediate setting up of anti-corruption seats in all Area Commands to monitor officers’ conduct and report to his office accordingly.
On anti-smuggling activities, Atte, directed the Federal Operations Units to intensify their border patrols to bring smugglers to book, emphasising that an immediate review of all operational procedures should be focused on giving maximum effect to the ban on all hinterland patrols in the country”, he added.

He also quoted the acting CGC of dismantling all task forces under any name or guise operating in all seaports, airports and land borders are disbanded with immediate effect.

According to him, all officers serving in these ad hoc units were to be withdrawn and redeployed immediately.
