FAAN to enforce parking rule for tanker drivers

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Saleh Dunoma has reiterated the resolution of the Authority to ensure that all tanker drivers strictly adhere to the rules of engagement on parking and operating around the airport environment.

He stated this recently in Lagos at an interactive forum with Aviation Correspondents.

While fielding questions from the journalists, Dunoma noted that the notorious act of parking tankers along the airport road would no longer be tolerated as the act was capable of jeopardising safety and security of the airport, which would adversely affect airport users.

He noted that an adequate parking space had already been provided for the tanker drivers by the Authority and there was a standing agreement between the FAAN and leaders of the tanker drivers’ union to only make use of the aviation designated trailer parks for parking purposes, except during loading or discharging of fuel at the tank farms.

Saleh, therefore, directed relevant security agencies to rise up to the challenge of enforcing strict compliance with the extant rules of parking for tanker drivers within the airport environment.

The tankers drivers were moved away from the airport road few years ago where they obstructed traffic movement and were taken to a place farther down the same road but over time they had stopped parking there; rather, they now park along the airport and had even started parking at the area they were driven away from before.

The tankers presence along the airport has both security and safety and security implication as street urchins could disguise as vehicle conductors to access sensitive areas of the airport in the night.

The tankers could ignite fire that would ravage the airport and with closeness of the car park to tank farms, the fireball and its consequences could best be imagined. So airport users had urged FAAN to take a drastic step to remove these vehicles from the areas where they obstruct traffic and jeopardise other activities at the airport.

Motorists had complained that the tankers cause traffic jam at the airport road, near Nahco Junction and because of the way the vehicles were parked they narrow the road at the corner before the junction. There have been times incidents happen at the area when motorists jump to the next lane in order to avoid getting close to the trailers. Airport users look forward to decisive action by FAAN.
