Food security: Female farmers advocate price control

Women farmers in Osun State have appealed to Governor Rauf Aregbesola to introduce price control mechanism for agricultural produce in order to encourage more investment in farming and ensure food security.

The farmers said this in Osogbo on Tuesday at a workshop organised for smallholder female farmers by the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre with the support of the United States Agency for International Development.

A representative of Shekinah Farms in Iwo, Mrs. Dorcas Dada, complained that since there were no ways of preserving most farm produce from getting rotten, adding that due to this, farmers were always forced to sell them at ridiculous prices.

This, she said, was one of the major setbacks for farmers, especially during harvest periods, when there was always a glut.

According to the farmer, this is also responsible for the lack of interest by some people, especially the youth, in agriculture.

Dada said, “We always record losses, especially where there is a glut. This happens regularly because we all produce and harvest at the same time; so, when we bring our produce to market, the buyers determine the price.
