FG to unveil fresh standards, guidelines for ICT operators July

The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr. Peter Jack, on Thursday stated that arrangement had been concluded to unveil 29 new standards, guidelines and regulations for all Information Communications and Technology (ICT) operators in the country next month.
The DG, who made the disclosure on the agency’s multi-stakeholder approach for rapid deployment of e-governance across all sectors of the economy at press briefing in Abuja, said the 29 standards and guidelines was developed by NITDA with inputs from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
According to him, the new standards, regulations and guidelines will specify the type of hardware that will be imported or being manufactured in the country before it goes into the market.
Jack said: “We have developed 29 standards, guidelines and regulations for all categories of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) operators.”
The benchmarks, the DG averred had become very necessary to regulate the industry on what they are supposed to do and the way they should carry it out.
He said before any hardware is imported or manufactured in the country, there must be specifications that it must meet.
“Also we shall set guidelines for software in the country as this will help in the protection of property rights. There is a need for us to register these software so that the person who deploys it has the right over it and that such software should also able to run on the current system that NITDA has.”
He said the agency was committed to using IT to unleash developmental initiatives across every area of the economy, adding that there is a new direction and strong commitment to restore the various base of the country’s economy.
He said: “What we planned is to start from our home base which is NITDA to create a new Nigeria that will create harmony and commitments to national values and goals as one nation.
The DG noted that the actualisation of the country as one of the 20 top economies cannot be attained without IT, adding that this is the time that there is a need for all to put country first f before self.

He added that the development of a cyber forensic laboratory would drastically reduce corruption to an infinitesimal level with the planned deployment of e-governance across all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Jack said: “We are starting a new value system where people must recognize the nation first before individual, where our supreme mandate is to create a framework for research development, development standardization of IT activities and operations and system in the country.
“This is wide mandate that is all encompassing and covers every aspect of the Nigerian economy where we have a responsibility to use IT to promote productivity across all sectors.
“In fact our strategic national goal is to position Nigeria as a top 20 economies using IT and at the lower end, the mission is to develop and regulate for sustainable national development and our vision is to position NITDA as a catalyst for transformation, knowledge based economy.”
