PHCN retirees lament non-payment of pensions

Retired workers under the National Electric Power Authority and the Power Holding Company of Nigeria have asked the Federal Government to intervene in the alleged non-payment of their pensions.

Some of the pensioners who visited The Punch office in Osogbo on Tuesday lamented that they had not been paid in the last three months.

One of the representatives of the retired workers, Mr. Muhammed Akanji, told our correspondent that the Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company had not been regular in payment of pensions to the affected persons.

Akanji, however, said that their payment was regular until the responsibility of paying them was transferred to NELMCO.

According to him, many of the pensioners are undergoing serious economic hardship occasioned by the refusal of the company to pay them their dues.

He said, “We are being owed three months’ pensions. This is too much. There is nobody you can run to who will lend you money because they are not sure you will repay on time.

“Some of our members have died while some have become invalid. Some of them are being held before they can stand. This is always a common sight anytime we hold our meetings.

“We should not be made to suffer like this after serving our fatherland meritoriously. This kind of shabby treatment will have negative effect on workers who are currently serving because they are telling them that they will not be taken care of after service.”

The refusal of the NELMCO to pay workers’ pension, Akanji said, had deprived some of the retirees’ children access to education. He said that some of their children had been driven out of schools because of the inability of their parents to pay their fees.

    What is the Federal Government doing about all these? Not being paid for three months is really bad. Meanwhile, they spend trillions on frivolities. I think this should be looked into.
