179.7MT of rice imported in December

Despite efforts by  the federal government to improve the nation’s local rice production, a total of 179,682 metric tones of the staple food were imported into the country last month alone.

Another 30,000 metric tones of the product is expected to land ENL terminal on the 7th of this month.

According to the shipping position of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, made available to Vanguard, 41,382 metric tones which represent the largest volume for last month landed at Greenview Development Nigeria Limited, GDNL and ENL Consortium Ltd, ENL, operators terminals E and C and D respectively on the 14th of December.

On the 27th and 29th, 38,000 and 30,800 metric tones were shipped into Apapa port while the same port received 26,000, 25,000 and 18,500 metric tones between 8th and 27th of last month.

Similarly, five vessels laden with frozen fish are expected to bring in a total of 12,200 metric tones between the 6th and 7th of this month. Three ships, M.V Frio Vladivostok, Green Nova and Green Brasil are expected to have berth on Tuesday with the same product at the Lagos port.

Two vessels, M.V Harengus and Breizklipper are also expected to berth with 4,300 metric tones of frozen fish on the 7th. Meanwhile, 13,527 metric tones of the same product had already been discharged at the Lagos port between the 19th and 31st of last month.

In the month of December, M.V Summer Flower, Cape Belle, Alma and Silver Horn brought in 4,847, 3,400, 3,300 and 1,980 metric tones of frozen fish respectively.

On Wednesday, January 07, 2015, a total of 43,400 metric tones of bulk sugar was brought in by M.V Ocean Splendor and is expected to have berthed at GDNL.

Between Thursday and Saturday this week, 76,826 metric tones of bulk wheat are expected to arrive at the Lagos port on board M.V Ocean Beauty and Desert Victory. Similarly, M.V Elenim is expected to bring in 24,000 metric tones of bulk salt on Wednesday while 46,405 metric tones of bulk coal are expected to have berthed at the Lagos port on the same day.

Other consignments expected at the Lagos port are ethanol, general cargo, vehicles, containers, soda ash and petroleum products from this week to the 23rd of this month.
