ANAN urges FG to explore opportunities in non-oil sectors

By on December 16, 2014

The President of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Alhaji Sakirudeen Labode has urged the federal government to look inwards for alternative means of funding the budget following the slide in crude oil prices.

A statement from the association at the weekend quoted Labode to have made the plea at the sixth Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme (MCPD) of the association held in Abeokuta recently.
According to him, the country should not continue to rely solely on the price of crude oil in the international market in preparing and financing its national budget because of the unpredictable nature of the commodity in the international market.

He advised that all tiers of government should reduce the cost of governance by cutting down on recurrent expenditure.
Leakages and wastage in business of government should be blocked, he added.

“Our national needs should be prioritised by appropriating funds to those sectors that will grow the economy like agriculture, rods, health, education, transportation etc,’’ he said.
Labode recalled that the association was admitted into full membership of IFAC  on Friday, November 7, 2014 in Rome, Italy.
He said the IFAC Governing Council announced the admission during its November meeting held at Westin Excelsior Hotel, Rome.

The ANAN president described the MCPD as a continuous retraining programme for members of the association aimed at enhancing their service delivery to their employers and also a key requirement of International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

“It is rotated among the six geo-political zones of the country every year, affording members the opportunity to know other parts of the country,’’ Labode said.
He said that the governing council of the association had given approval for the opening of outreach campuses of the Nigerian College of Accountancy (NCA) in the six-geo political zones of the country.
He urged members to ensure good corporate governance in their dealings as well as to adhere to the ethics of the profession in all its ramifications by promoting accountability, honesty, integrity and high moral values.

Labode urged every member to register with the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC).
